Celebrating the Spirit of Assam Vibrant Bihu Festival

It’s a chilly grey London evening in October 2023. Post a festive afternoon of Durga Puja, a bunch of British Assamese friends huddles together in a cozy London household. They chit chat over a warm pot of afternoon tea. The trail of conversation takes them to a muse of home in Assam. They remember that it’s just 6 months shy of the beloved Bohag Bihu, the season cherished by every Assamese heart. So, one of them starts tapping the fingers on the mahogany wooden table, slugs a drought of tea, and raises a voice. “Why don’t we pull together the Bohagi festivities in London?” Smiles brim on their faces. As they step out to the street heading back home, the 6 degree chill in the air nips their nose tips and cheeks but the thought of Bihu celebration, warms their heart.

Thus, the seeds of Brihottor London Bihu were planted—a springtime event designed to unite the Assamese community in the UK. This celebration would not just be about festivity; it would offer a space for generations to bridge together, blending the traditions treasured by the older community with the energy of newer students and professionals. A pivotal aspect of the event would be its role in connecting British-born Assamese children with their roots, allowing them to experience their ancestral culture firsthand. Just as nature blooms with the spirit of Bohag back home, Brihottor London Bihu would seek to recreate that joy and familiarity. Naming the event “Brihottor” offers a distinctive Assamese identity, rooting it in heritage while fostering a sense of belonging for the Assamese diaspora in the UK. Through these gatherings, the community aims to build a space where traditions not only continue but thrive, and each year, Brihottor London Bihu aspires to grow, uniting generations and creating a legacy of pride, unity, and cultural celebration.

Every Assamese soul, young to old, treasures Bohag Bihu close to heart. There is a reason for it. Bohag Bihu brings a sense of pleasure in every form. Brihottor Bihu brings in those pleasures to the Assamese residing in UK. Imagine the aura of a beautiful spring day in UK where alongside cherry blossoms, you taste the melting sweetness of molasses in pithas, a group of jovial people clad in golden Muga attires meet and greet you, the upbeat of Dhol and Pepa stirs up your spirit. A pivotal experience of the event is yielded by the performances of renowned artists invited from Assam. Apart from these it has fun filled activities and performances giving opportunities of participation to the UK Assamese residents. Your homesickness can be swept away by the celebrations and love of the community.

Brihottor Bihu is shaped with the fondness and yearning for Assamese traditions. The event is envisioned to bridge us with our roots in Assam. It is a welcoming place for every Assamese in UK to enjoy the festival with equality. On the 2024 event, the guest artist was Deeplina Deka. The artist’s performance was preceded by events like fashion show, Sattriya Dance performance, Bihu dance. The event also provided delicious Indian dinner. Be a foodie, be a jet-setter, be a DJ junkie fancying EDMs tuned with Bihu lyrics, be a bright and young or old and mellow, this event is meant for the enjoyment of one and all unitedly. The 2024 event was celebrated and concluded laudably in Slough where everyone enjoyed to their heart’s content. The organisers look forward to the 2025 event for another year of successful celebrations.
